TVI roles
What Does a TVI Do?
A Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments is an educator whose expertise lies in understanding how visual impairment affects access to learning. The TVI's role is not to improve eyesight. The role is to help the student access education, build skills, develop concepts, and participate meaningfully in school and life.
What TVIs may teach
Depending on the learner, TVIs may teach braille, tactile graphics, assistive technology, accessible literacy, concept development, self-advocacy, organization, visual efficiency, and Expanded Core Curriculum skills.
TVI vs. vision therapist
Vision therapy is typically clinical and focuses on visual functions when appropriate. TVI services are educational and focus on access, learning, literacy, participation, and independence. Both may matter, but they are not the same service.
